Scene of the Week: Flash Gordon Football
While I would not classify myself as a football fan, there’s no denying the impact that football, both professional and college, has had on American pop culture.
With the NFL season kicking off this week, we decided to celebrate with our first ever Gladiators of the Gridiron Week! A week devoted to football players turned action stars and movies that feature a football theme. What I am trying to say is it is going to be a regular Pigskinpalooza around here for the next 7 days!
I get to kick off this special week with a Scene of the Week from a true cult classic, Flash Gordon.
In the 1980 film Flash Gordon, our hero Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones) is a well know football star from the New York Jets, who through a series of events finds himself on the distant planet of Mongo. Mongo is ruled by Ming the Merciless (Max Von Sydow). As his moniker implies, Ming is not a humanitarian and is looking to destroy planet Earth. So Flash and his new friends Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov (along with a killer Queen soundtrack) have the unenviable task of trying to defeat Ming and stop the destruction of their home planet in the process.
Our Scene of the Week showcases some of Flash’s football skills as he goes up against Ming’s minions. We even get some cheerleading action from Dale Arden!
