Scene of the Week: The Perfect Weapon Kata
The Perfect Weapon is by no means a perfect movie but it damn sure is fun to watch! We all have certain films that we’ve grown up loving even though sometimes we realize that they may not be that good. It’s kind of like having that friend that you’ve known since you were 5 but you really don’t have anything in common other than, “we’ve known each other for a long ass time”. You’re not going to stop being friends just cause your buddy is a huge hippie now and you’re still pissed John McCain lost. Once you’ve enjoyed something for so long it becomes a part of you.
TPW is that movie for me. While most of the other stars were these huge, over the top, muscle-bound heroes like Stallone or Arnold, Jeff Speakman was more your average, everyday, approachable looking dude who could secretly kick the shit out of you. He epitomizes the “speak softly and carry a big stick” that we all love to root for. The film itself has some really great fight scenes and it features what may be the greatest ensemble of Awesome Asian Bad Guys in the history of cinema. You’ll see Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, James Hong, Mako, Professor Toru Tanaka, James Lew, and more! That alone should make you want to watch this film. If it doesn’t, just check out this weeks Scene of the Week that features star Jeff Speakman rocking out to Snap!’s “I’ve Got the Power” while breaking off a sweet Kempo kata. If only I had video evidence of me trying to recreate this scene when I was ten…
