Scene of the Week: Long Tall Sally 2.0
When Richard Wayne Penniman, better known to the world as Little Richard, sat down way back in 1956 with his writing partners Robert “Bumps” Blackwell and Enotris Johnson and they came up with the song “Long Tall Sally” there is no way they could have known then that the song they were creating would find new life in the world of action entertainment more than three decades later when it became associated with the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Predator.
But Predator was not the only action film of the 1980’s to utilize the high energy music of Little Richard. In 1989, four of Little Richard’s songs were used in the Dolph Lundgren film, Red Scorpion. The movie tells the story of Nikolai Rachenko, a member of Soviet Special Forces who realizes he is fighting on the wrong side when his superiors order him to kill the leader of a rebel army in Africa.
If there was one knock I could make on Red Scorpion it is that the movie drags at times, but when Red Scorpion starts cooking it really starts cooking. This week’s Scene of the Week features an awesome chase scene that is made all the better with the inclusion of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally”. This scene is so good it’ll make you say… Fuckin’ A!
