The Checklist: Danger 5 (S2 Ep6) “Back to the Führer”
It’s a Checklist first for us here at Bulletproof Action as we head to the other side of the globe and deliver a Checklist so Australian that I developed an accent while writing it. I feel like I’ve been watching so many Australian films and shows of late that I need to start spreading Vegemite on every piece of my food. Seriously, though, all stereotypes aside, I’m remarkably envious of the lifestyle that I perceive many Aussies to live and I have been thoroughly enjoying some excellent films from them like Wyrmwood, Son of a Gun, The Horseman, and this show called Danger 5. You’d be a whole lot cooler if you checked it out sooner rather than later.
For those of you not “in the know”, Danger 5 is a team of spy-like soldiers dedicated to stopping the Axis Powers during WW2 and most importantly, killing Hitler. The five members of the team are led by the eagle-headed Colonel Chestbridge and they somehow fit saving the world in their daily routine of drinking, smoking, and womanizing/(man-izing?). The second season finds the team 18 years removed from the war and back in action when they realize Hitler is alive and still attempting to take over the world. This episode, titled “Back to the Führer”, sends the team back to WW2 as Hitler attempts to gain invulnerability by transferring the essence of a purebred Aryan woman into his body. Yup, this show is a comedy so it’s ok to portray all this stuff on screen. Trust me. Let’s get started!
- Do any characters have animal heads?
Hell yeah they do! Colonel Chestbridge makes an appearance as they return to the 1940’s in search of the new female version of Hitler. I know, that sounds weird as hell but if you want to gain great power, sometimes you need to transfer your essence into a teenage girl and then transport her back in time. Duh! 1/1
- Are there any stereotypical interpretations of different cultures?
A scene at the very beginning of the episode shows the Italian army fighting against their former allies (the Germans) using a technique that I’m not sure was developed during the war; kicking soccer balls at people. 2/2
- Do the Danger 5 team partake in a good amount of drinking?
Of course they do! In one scene they scale a wall using a rope in one hand and drink out of a whiskey glass with the other hand. The biggest threat to the success of their mission is when they discover a waterfall that dispenses cocktails. That would distract even the most focused secret agent. 3/3
- Do the Nazi’s come up with a ridiculous weapon to win the war?
This one is a little tougher as they don’t develop any weapons as in Lizard Men, Dinosaurs with Lasers, or women with diamond skin, but the man formerly known as Johnny Hitler tries to make himself invincible so if that wouldn’t help them win the war then I didn’t take two military history classes in college. Mark it dude! 4/4
- Does Hitler narrowly escape death?
As you watch through the first two series of Danger 5, you’ll notice that the team comes face to face with Hitler many times but isn’t able to finish the job. Most of these occasions end with Adolf leaping from a window as the Danger 5 team blasts away at him but this episode changes the script a bit as the D5 team from the future teams up with the D5 team from the past to try and stop Hitler before he becomes invincible. Spoiler alert, they don’t. Hitler gets his power but it’s soon sucked out by the teenage girl he used earlier with the “das essence sucking machine” and the Danger 5 team head back to the future under the assumption that Hitler died in the ensuing explosion. But did he??? No, he did not. 5/5
- Final tally = 5/5 (100%) Danger 5 is a show that is absolutely ridiculous and amazingly entertaining. Check out the trailer for Series 1 below and you can find it on both Hulu and Netflix so get to watching now!
