Damsels: Christy Chung – The Defender
The half-Chinese, half-Vietnamese actress who became one of the hottest Asian women on the planet in the late 90’s stars as Michelle Yeung; the girlfriend of a rich businessman who is being targeted by hired assassins after she witnesses a murder. Her only hope for survival is Jet Li’s no nonsense, Mainland Chinese, Kung Fu mastering bodyguard named John Chang. Chang plays the Kevin Costner to Christy Chung’s Whitney but the movie eliminates the singing and replaces it with a Honk Kong bullet orchestra that is music to this writers ears. Poor Christy plays the perfect damsel in distress for the tough as nails Chang to defend against and endless stream of worthless assassins. It’s only when Michelle decides to get all up in Chang’s business that she is finally put in serious danger. Let that be a lesson folks; if you’re trying to protect a woman from being killed by a bunch of Chinese gangsters, keep your thing in your pants.
The lovely Chung grew up in Quebec, Canada and speaks French, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. Meanwhile, I still need spell check to tell me how to spell words in my own language.
