The Checklist: Spartacus (S3 Ep1) “Fugitivus”
I had been putting off watching the Spartacus show on Starz for some time. I tried watching it a few years ago but was put off from it by how horrible the writing was and how lamely it tried to mimic the film 300. I read that the showrunners were basically forced to do that during the first few episodes of the first season and to be honest, it did get much better later on. It’s a real shame what happened to the Andy Whitfield, he was a really talented guy. No person deserves to go down like that. Either way, Whitfield was replaced by the newly-crowned Spartacus Liam McIntyre and this is my first chance to see him in action. Let’s see how he stacks up in The Checklist.
1-Boobies, Dong, and Bush Oh My: I have to admit that even I wasn’t prepared for the amount of nudity that Spartacus showed on an episodic basis. Season 3 is no different than the two previous when it comes to the sins of the flesh. A whole bunch of wieners in this episode, if you’re into that sort of thing. 1/5
2- Roman Ebonics: My biggest issue with the series to date has been the over-use of modern day curse words and language that would not have made a lick of sense in ancient times. One character actually calls another one a “fucking bitch”. I highly doubt that Roman women used such language. 2/5
3- Bromance: It wasn’t until the end of the first season (season 2 was a prequel) that Spartacus and Crixus finally became good buddies. That isn’t to say that they don’t come to blows at all but they always hug it out in the end. Like true bros. 3/5
4- And the crowd goes wild: Of course it’s a show about gladiators so it should have a contest between two of the like. It doesn’t hold up compared to some of the other gladiatorial contests but that is to be expected because all of the main characters are on the run instead of fighting in the arenas. 4/5
5- Fatality: Throughout the entire series, Spartacus has always managed to come up with some well-thought-out deaths. They’ve spared no expense when it comes to the blood and gore that one might have seen in the arena. 5/5
Final Tally: 5/5 Holy shit! This show really knows how to draw a guy’s attention. It has tons of killing, naked breasts, and men shouting while swinging swords about. What more can you ask for?
