Scene of the Week: All Outta Bubblegum
Later today the WWE will present WrestleMania 32 from AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The largest crowd to witness a professional wrestling event in North America is expected.
On what should end up being a monumental day for World Wrestling Entertainment, I can’t help but look back to the beginning of WrestleMania and more specifically at the man who arguably made it all possible, the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
Piper was the straw that stirred the drink as Vince McMahon was building his vision for what professional wrestling/sports entertainment would be. Piper got into it verbally and physically with two pop culture icons at the time, Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T. The mainstream media attention this provided laid the foundation for what has become the WWE’s biggest event of the year and the event that has made WWE a global juggernaut.
When Piper passed away last year, fans of sports entertainment and action movies mourned. Piper had left a lasting impression on both forms of entertainment. Even Madison Square Garden paid tribute to Hot Rod on their marquee.
This week’s Scene of the Week is from the John Carpenter movie, They Live. The scene is short but sweet and features Roddy in his most iconic movie role, delivering a classic movie line. Thank you for everything Roddy, you are gone but you will never be forgotten…
