Scene of the Week: The Blues Brothers
When I am feeling down, even blue you might say, there are two things sure to cheer me up, movies with wanton destruction of property and movies with vehicles driving inside of buildings. Luckily for me, the action comedy classic The Blues Brothers features both types of action in one over the top scene.
Many might see The Blue Brothers as a comedy with hints of a musical, but it is squarely in the action comedy arena. Need proof? When the movie came out in 1980, The Blue Brothers held the record for most cars wrecked during filming with 103! The chase between Jake and Elwood Blues and the cops took place in the real life Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, IL which at the time had been closed for over a year. The cars skidding around, storefronts getting smashed, people running for their safety, disco pants, baby clothes, the new Oldsmobiles, and even that Miss Piggy wanker always cheer me up. Not to mention the inclusion of the Blue Brothers superior cover of Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose” as the soundtrack to the indoor demolition derby.
