Bullet Points: Interrogation
WWE Studios is back again with another entry into the world of action entertainment. This time out it is Interrogation starring WWE Hall of Famer Edge (Adam Copeland) and Lana (C.J. Perry).
Interrogation marks the second WWE Studios appearances for both Copeland and Perry. Copeland starred along side Jamie Kennedy in 2012’s Bending the Rules. While Perry had a cameo appearance in 2016’s Countdown starring Dolph Ziggler.
- Our Hero: I could best describe Lucas Nolan (Adam “Edge” Copeland) as the love child of Will Hunting and Shawn Spencer from Psych, if said love child grew up to become an interrogator for the FBI. Nolan has a photographic memory and would likely be accepted by Mensa International if he applied. We do learn that Nolan did have a troubled past and that he was actually living in the streets at one point in his teenage years. When Agent Sara Ward (Julia Benson) from the FBI’s Anti-Terror division shows up to investigate a bombing at the Federal Building in Minneapolis, Nolan’s co-workers Mark (Michael Rogers) and Becky (C.J. “Lana” Perry) can’t stop raving about how wicked smart Lucas is. Ward has her reservations and she makes it clear that she is not a fan of Nolan’s unorthodox methods like when he takes the bomber on the investigation with them. Who does that?!?! Lucas Nolan that is who! To his credit, Lucas Nolan lives up to his hype and then some, proving he has brains and brawn as he physically and mentally goes toe to toe with the movie’s villain.
- Our Villain: Patrick Sabongui (who you may recogize from The Flash TV series) plays Vasti Radan, a disenfranchised man looking to blow up the world of lies he feels the United States of America really is. From women walking around with fake tits to the crooked politicians, Vasti hates everything about the USA but boy does he loves to play mind games. Vasti finds the perfect foe in Lucas Nolan. In Vasti’s anti-American rhetoric, Nolan is able to extract key bits of information to slowly but surely learn the location of the other bomb that Vasti has in the city and how Vasti put his diabolical and elaborate plan together. Nolan is also able to unlock some of the painful memories from Vasti’s formative years, giving our hero and our villain something in common.
For most of the movie, Interrogation felt like another “race against the clock” WWE Studios action flick, not unlike one of the 12 Rounds movies or Countdown. But Interrogation throws in a huge twist at the end, that I never saw coming, making this a unique entry in the WWE Studios catalog. And while other WWE Studios movies have been classified as action thrillers, Interrogation was heavier on the thriller and a little lighter on the action than those previous releases.
Copeland’s time as a regular on the TV series Haven provided the Toronto native with some all important acting experience, something many of the wrestlers turned actors that WWE Studios casts for their films can not boast. And that acting experience is evident in Copeland’s turn as Lucas Nolan.
C.J. Perry’s supporting role honestly felt like an afterthought. It is like the producers simply wanted an attractive female IT expert (and Perry’s character has to be in contention for hottest IT expert ever) and just consulted the WWE on who they could part with for a few weeks while the movie was being shot. The role of Becky literally could have went to any attractive female and it wouldn’t have made a difference. I would have been interested to see how Perry could have done in the Agent Ward role.
- Sorry Mathematicians: There were more than a few wrestling fans that I spoke to prior to the release of Interrogation that came to the conclusion that Lana + Rated R Movie = Lana Boobs. I hate to burst everyone’s boob loving bubble, but you’ll see more of Lana on Monday nights than you will in Interrogation.
- Must Have Been a Samsung: Interrogation features a laptop computer that explodes.
- If You Ever: …wanted to hear Edge call someone a “scared little c*nt” than this is the movie for you.
- Copeland > Stallone: Yes I am going to wrap up this review by saying that Adam Copeland is better than one of the greatest action stars in history, Mr. Sylvester Stallone. But allow me to clarify that bold statement. Copeland can not touch Stallone in terms of being a blockbuster action star. But I’ll take Copeland’s narration at the beginning and end of Interrogation over Stallone’s narration at the beginning of Cobra any day of the week.
