Scene of the Week: Welcome to Zardoz
If you didn’t know, James Bond is my favorite movie character of all time. Sean Connery is my favorite actor to play James Bond. When I saw that Sean Connery was in an action/fantasy movie called Zardoz from one of my favorite directors John Boorman (Excalibur) I was already hooked. And then I saw the opening, a masterpiece of cinema if I ever saw one.
From the set to the dialogue and the unforgettable red underwear with bandolier costumes, the opening scene of Zardoz has every element to suck the audience in. Zardoz tells the story of the immortal Eternals and mortal Brutals but that is not important. All you need to know is that Sean Connery plays Zed, a Brutal Exterminator who takes his orders from Zardoz, a god-like head floating in the sky. And boy does Zardoz spit out some doozies, literally. I agree with most of what Zardoz says, guns are good (at least in action movies.) However, his second viewpoint seems a little harsh, mine has never let me down.
