Scene of the Week: Blindsided
Most people would think that sight is a prerequisite to being a great fighter but that conclusion would fail to recognize characters like Zatoichi, Marvel’s Daredevil, or Rutger Hauer’s character from the excellent film Blind Fury. Just the realities of filmmaking and fight choreography provide anyone without the inability to see a very serious handicap when making a fight scene so why is it that blind guys are such badasses when it comes time to throw down? The answer is “Stop over thinking and enjoy the Damn action!”
Blindsided starts off with a brief look into the life of our soon-to-be hero Walter (Eric Jacobus). He’s a man whose deficiency hasn’t kept him from doing what he loves; making Apple pie. Who doesn’t love a good Apple pie? Clearly Walter is one of those guys who does the same thing day in and day out. What everyone didn’t know is that Walter has been loading up on calories because he is apparently training in martial arts non-stop.
Blindsided works both as a short film or (what I’m hoping for) as the opening scene of a future feature film. It’s able to create a character who is both interesting and fascinating in only a few short minutes while delivering a superb fight scene involving multiple people. The attention to detail when it comes to the editing and choreography is absolutely noticeable and viewers will be left with a strong desire to see more from Eric Jacobus and the man named Walter. Check it out.
