Scene of the Week: Battle of the Sexes

The date was September 20, 1973. The place the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The event was a tennis match billed as the Battle of the Sexes between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King. Nearly 90 million people the world over witnessed King strike a blow for women when she defeated Riggs in three sets.

King’s win made an exhibition tennis match into a historic event and opened the doors for women in other sports to prove they could go toe to toe with their male counterparts.

Decades after the televised Battle of the Sexes, martial artist Cynthia Rothrock would be kicking guy’s asses on the regular. In this week’s Scene of the Week we take a look at Rothrock squaring off with a male opponent who is much larger than her. But the behemoth soon learns the hard way that dynamite comes in small packages!

The scene is from the 1992 release Lady Dragon where Rothrock plays Kathy Galagher, an ex-CIA agent on a mission to track down the man who killed her husband. Now join Robert Ginty (The Exterminator) and a throng of rabid fight fans as we witness another Battle of the Sexes…
