Women of Action: Gwyneth Paltrow
Today is an especially great day. It’s the birthday of several of my favorite living people; rock opera legend Meat Loaf, acting god of villains Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and tiny sex kitten Dillion Harper. It’s a true day to celebrate! But even though I have no Wi-Fi where I’m sitting, I’m jamming out to Meat Loaf’s “I’d Lie for You (and that’s the truth)” on Spotify and definitely not searching for pictures of Dillion Harper online. The list of birthdays doesn’t stop with rock stars and porn babes, though, and looking at the list of celebrities who will be eating gluten-free, plant-based cup cakes today I couldn’t help but notice one slender, blonde, bombshell who has more than once delivered the goods in an action movie: Gwyneth Paltrow.
Gwyneth’s run as Pepper Potts in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has probably been the best of her career. I’m not saying that because I haven’t enjoyed her other roles as much, but it doesn’t help that she hasn’t had too many action films under her belt and we all know I’m not going to be spending my weekends watching some crap love-fest with her and Joaquin Phoenix. I think I like her work as Pepper because she’s a bit player and isn’t asked to carry the entire weight of the film on her tiny little shoulders. But if you’ve seen Iron Man 3 there is no doubt that her character could easily lug that suit around, blasting bad guys and CGI aliens all over the place.
Pepper’s character is the one that keeps Tony Stark rooted in reality. It’s hard for a globe-trotting billionaire superhero to stay grounded at times and it’s easy to see that without Pepper, Tony’s life is in complete shambles. Let’s salute Gwyneth and hope that she’s able to don the suit once more.
