Scene of the Week: An Introduction to Matthias
I love watching Matthais Hues drag dudes around by the their faces.
If that sounds like a strange thing to say then you’ve obviously never seen the secretly excellent No Retreat, No Surrender 2. It is less known because of its lack of Jean Claude Van Damme, no doubt, but the cast that is brought together for the unrelated sequel is among the most impressive of the late 80’s in the martial arts genre. Loren Avedon takes over the lead this time around. He’s not fighting in some tournament. There’s no trophy or bragging rights involved. Loren is fighting for his life!
Surrounding Avedon in the cast is mega-hot, mega-awesome Cynthia Rothrock. She’s the preeminent fighting lady in the history of action cinema, and for good reason. Her fight scenes are crisp, fluid, and fast enough to keep the attention of even your most A.D.D. kids. While the film also features Max Thayer (who freaking rules!), its biggest contribution to this particular post is in its use of the German Martial Arts Giant himself, Matthias Hues!
You may remember Matthias as the big muscled out white dude who always kicked the crap out of everyone save for the main star in a whole bunch of movies in the 80’s and 90’s. Surprisingly, No Retreat, No Surrender 2 was actually Matthias’ first acting role. Let’s just say he kicked some serious ass! The scene we’re checking out today has Hues beating a guy so badly that it’s almost hard to watch. He literally throws the guy around like a ragdoll. The little dude smartly makes the attempt to grab Matthias by the junk but only lives to pay for it. Hues delivers the beating of a lifetime to this lowly, unnamed prisoner but nothing compares to the devilishly demented death that gets dealt to him. Have mercy Matthias…
