Scene of the Week: Black Belt Jones
There is no denying the historical significance of the film Enter the Dragon. The Hong Kong/American production was a first of its kind. It was also the apex of the tragically short film career of Bruce Lee, a once in a lifetime performer. But while Enter the Dragon marked the end of Bruce Lee’s film career (if you don’t count Game of Death of course), it was just the beginning for Jim Kelly.
After the worldwide success of Enter the Dragon, Jim Kelly was a made man and found himself in the right place at the right time as he was able to land roles that capitalized on the popularity of chopsocky films and the Blaxploition boom in Hollywood. The first starring role the Millersburg, Kentucky native was able to land after playing Williams in Enter the Dragon was in 1974’s Black Belt Jones.
Kelly played the titular character in the film as he battles the mob and thwarts their attempts at forcing his friend out of her martial arts dojo. In this week’s Scene of the Week, we will take a look at one of the memorable sequences from the film as Black Belt Jones does battle on a train and looks super fly doing it…
