Scene of the Week: G.I. Joe: The Movie
There was a time in my life if you had asked me what my favorite television show was or what my favorite comic book series was or what may favorite toy line was… the answer for all three would have been G.I. Joe!
I could not get enough of G.I. Joe! I think part of the reason that I got into renting Cannon produced films back in the day was partially G.I. Joe inspired… American Ninja, Invasion U.S.A., Revenge of the Ninja and most of all The Delta Force, all had many of the elements that I loved about G.I. Joe. I even remember having a passionate discussion with a classmate in the fall of 1985 about how there should be a live action G.I. Joe movie with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat playing Quick Kick.
The live action version of G.I. Joe would be decades away at that point, but an animated movie aptly titled G.I. Joe: The Movie, was released in 1987. The movie featured the voices of Sgt. Slaughter, Don Johnson and Burgess Meredith and was coming off the heels of the animated Transformers: The Movie that was released the year prior.
The plot of the movie was a in many ways a departure from what Joe fans were used to, it changed the history of Cobra and it introduced some new major players into the G.I. Joe universe. These changes and additions made G.I. Joe: The Movie a divisive subject amongst G.I. Joe fans…. but one thing I think everyone can agree on was just how awesome the movie’s opening was. This weeks’ Scene of the Week spotlights the opening and it manages to capture everything that I loved about G.I. Joe in just under three minutes. Watch along with me as I fight the urge to start buying vintage 1980’s G.I. Joe toys…
