Women of Action: Charlize Theron – Aeon Flux
I remember going over to my friend’s house (we didn’t have cable) to watch Aeon Flux during MTV’s “Liquid TV”. Anyone who has any memory of Liquid TV in the exciting times of MTV in the early 90’s will remember it for how cool and unique it was. Now let’s take a moment to dive into the 2005 film version of the same name.
Someone had the bright idea that putting Charlize Theron in skin-tight body suits and having her fight futuristic soldiers was all that was needed for this movie to be entertaining. Well, they weren’t wrong…
Like most unstoppable assassins in movies, Aeon Flux’s record on killing is impeccable until she gets the one job that she just can’t complete. Despite being really good at jumping over bushes and sharp, pointy grass, within 3 hours of attempting to kill Trevor Goodchild she is already sexing him up. If that is what she does to her targets then sign me up!
If you’ve seen other future movies like Equilibrium or The Hunger Games then you have a pretty good jumping off point on the world of Aeon Flux. A ruling body of the lone human civilization of Bregna is knee-deep in a war with a group of rebels. One might say that the rebels are “woke”. They’re tired of living the lives put in front of them by the very government that saved them from extinction. Times are kind of wild in Bregna. There is a giant wall around the city and a humungous floating squid thing in the sky. I can’t say that I ever got very invested in the characters or the story in Aeon Flux but it’s hard to deny that the action scenes and costume work didn’t put a smile on my face.
