Action Spotlight: Peppermint
I’m always pumped when an action movie makes its way to the big screen and it isn’t starring Mark Wahlberg. The last thing that I want to see is another Transformers movie or more garbage remakes of already good films. I’d rather sit through a dozen Steven Seagal movies than watch some trash reboot of Big Trouble in Little China where Jack Burton is now an Uber driver and Lo Pan is played by Ken Jeong. But if that does happen I should definitely get a writers credit for it!
Thankfully, September 7th will see a new entry into the revenge movie sub-genre with the release of Peppermint. Let’s shine a spotlight on this new actioner starring action vet Jennifer Garner.
Who: Riley North (Jennifer Garner) might sound like the name of a porn star but she’s just a mom. A mom who deeply loves her husband and young daughter.
What: While enjoying a lovely evening at the fair, the North family is caught in the crossfire of cartel violence and her husband and daughter are slain. Riley witnesses the murdering gang members drive off but is met with resistance at every turn as she tries to get justice for her family using traditional methods.
When: When the traditional methods like trials and lawsuits do nothing Riley disappears from the watchful eyes of the law. She reappears five years later with a set of skills that would rival any Liam Neeson movie of the last decade. It’s time to get her own kind of justice.
Where: Returning to the city where she lost everything, Riley becomes a guardian angel to the people of the crime-ridden streets. She doesn’t wear the white skull of The Punisher but she carries the same caliber rifles. Civilians know that the cartel are ruining the city and Riley’s effort to clean up the streets is met with nothing but gratitude.
Why: Guns. Lot’s of guns.
How: Not only is Riley an empowered woman, she is an unbelievable badass of a woman! She’s spent the past five years training in weapons and combat, just waiting for the time to exact revenge for her family. There is no scorn like a woman’s wrath.
I would have probably called this movie “Woman’s Wrath” but what do I know?
Peppermint certainly leaves a little something of a mystery with its title but I can already tell you from watching the trailer below… Bronson would approve.
