Bullet Points: Kid Fury: The Phantom Witch
Last summer, martial artist and filmmaker Jino Kang made the jump from creating feature films to creating his first short, Kid Fury. Kang also made the jump from portraying an action hero to an action villain in Kid Fury.
Both of these changes proved to be wise decisions from where I sit. Kid Fury was a quality piece of business and Jino Kang as the mobster Master Huang was Kang’s best performance to date and a role that really played to his strengths.
- Previously on Kid Fury: The first chapter in the Kid Fury story introduced us to Jimmy (Timothy Mah). Jimmy’s most prized possession, a small wooden box that contains a mysterious power, was stolen from him by a martial artist who trains under the watchful eye of Master Huang (Jino Kang). Jimmy tracks down the thief at Huang’s dojo and he comes prepared to fight. Good thing too, because Jimmy does some serious fighting taking on all of Huang’s students and even Master Huang himself before it is all said and done. As the first episode comes to a conclusion, Jimmy stabbed Huang right in the gut and things are not looking good for our villain. But when the Jimmy/Huang showdown is done, the mysterious box is nowhere to be found…
- Episode 2: As Kid Fury: The Phantom Witch begins, the story picks up with Jimmy wandering the streets on the hunt for his mysterious box. A tired and weary Jimmy ends up sleeping in an alley one night… while Jimmy sleeps on a piece of cardboard on the cold pavement, a stranger (or was it?!) covers him with a jacket. When Jimmy wakes up he takes the money that was in the jacket to buy himself some much needed food and then he gets an anonymous text message with directions to The Phantom Witch’s lair and information that The Phantom Witch has his box. We then get some Game of Death style action as Jimmy makes his way through The Phantom Witch’s guards in the parking garage, before heading into the building where he has some hallway fights with more of the Witch’s goons before he finally makes his way up to the roof to confront The Phantom Witch and retrieve his box. When The Phantom Witch claims she does not have Jimmy’s box or even know what he is talking about, Jimmy decides he will fight the Witch, but that doesn’t turn out too well…
- Twists and Turns: The Phantom Witch and her evil magic proved to be more than young Jimmy could handle and he finds himself tied up to a chair and being interrogated by the witchy woman and her sledgehammer wielding companion. But before any harm can come to him, Jimmy gets some help from an unlikely source… Master Huang?!? Huang apparently survived his confrontation with Jimmy and now he wants to help his son (you read that right) get the mysterious box back. This is also the scene where we learn that Master Huang had some sort of erotic awakening in Paris, France years earlier with The Phantom Witch as Jino Kang practices the art of self-deprecating humor… further strengthening my belief that Kang as a villain is the way to go.
Kid Fury: The Phantom Witch went to places I did not expect. If that is the kind of storytelling we can expect going forward, there is no telling where Kid Fury will go next, I just hope we don’t have to wait long to find out.
While Kid Fury’s direction may be a mystery, I can tell you exactly where this review is going next and that is to some of our patented Bonus Bullet Points…
