Women of Action: Survivors of Occupation
A good alien invasion movie doesn’t need to deliver much in the way of origin. All I need to see is a setting (Hey, look…Australia!) and a couple of the characters that we’ll be following, then do me a favor and have the alien ships show up all guns-a-blazin! That is pretty much what happens in Occupation (currently on Netflix). Specifically, we’re introduced to Dan Ewing and Temuera Morrison’s characters (Matt Simmons and Peter Bartlett, respectively) but I would venture to say that the real stars of Occupation are the ones without the Y chromosome. I’m talking, of course, about the ladies.
Perhaps the most valuable killer of the group (MVK?) is Amelia Chambers, played by the lovely Stephany Jacobsen. She is one of a handful of characters that make it out alive from the initial invasion and she takes a leading role in the continued survival of the group. She doesn’t do it by gathering berries, folks. Amelia is the first to pick up a rifle and lay down some serious alien ass whoopings!
All of the characters have lost loved ones and many of their friends and family are still being held captive by the aliens. Amelia also has to worry about her little brother and boyfriend Matt who is slowly turning into one hardened bastard. As it goes with most successful men, it’s the determination of Amelia that really allows Matt and his ragtag group of guerilla fighters to fight off the aliens in the Land Down Under.
Amelia isn’t the only chick responsible for their Red Dawn-like stand against the aliens. Rhiannon Fish’s Vanessa and Izzy Stevens both play equally valuable roles in keeping the survivors alive and in fighting shape.
If you’re looking for a cool alien invasion flick that blends Red Dawn with War of the Worlds than look no further than Luke Sparke’s Occupation.
