Scene of the Week: Kuffs – Apartment Shootout
1992’s Kuffs is an extremely underrated movie starring the always funny Christian Slater and featuring the type of fourth wall-breaking scenes that even Deadpool can’t match 25 years later. That fact that it had a few really good action scenes in it to go along with the comedy makes it something of an outlier in the early 90’s. Sure, Eddie Murphy had been making similar pictures for a while but Slater had the type of face that really made you want to smack. He wasn’t easy to like but I always ended up on his side by the end.
If you haven’t seen Kuffs, it’s a pretty simple story. Slater’s older brother, who was a cop and head of a private police force (those exist?), gets killed by some asshole and Slater’s useless character has to take over his brother’s business. We get to see some montages and Slater woos an underaged Milla Jovovich. The film is very light for the majority of it and I’m always surprised when I watch it that Christian Slater didn’t become a bigger star afterwards.
Check out my favorite scene below where Kuffs is attacked by his nemesis while waiting for his lady friend to show up for dinner.
