Scene of the Week: Anything Goes
After the runaway success of 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, everyone could see a sequel was coming. But I seriously doubt anyone could have predicted that the sequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (which was actually set before the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark, making it a prequel) would have started with a song and dance number.
But the song and dance number served as a great introduction to Kate Capshaw’s Willie Scott character, who was the featured performer at Club Obi Wan… a Hong Kong nightclub owned and operated by notorious gangster Lao Che (Roy Chiao, Bloodsport).
Willie Scott is not the only one doing business with Lao Che at Club Obi Wan, our favorite archaeologist Indiana Jones is at the club to make an exchange with Lao Che, the remains of a long dead Chinese Emperor for a precious diamond… although all parties involved soon find out that doing business with Lao Che is a dangerous proposition.
As our Scene of the Week begins, Lao Che has poisoned Dr. Jones and chaos ensues as Indy is on the hunt for the antidote that will save him, while Willie proves diamonds are a girls best friend… during all this there are panicked patrons, dancing girls, gangsters throwing knives, one shooting a tommy gun and the band plays on as anything goes…
