Women of Action: Katherine Waterston – Alien: Covenant
There are a few movie franchises that I will never abandon no matter how bad they might get. I hated The Predator but I’ll never miss anything featuring that dreadlocked bastard and nothing short of triple bypass surgery would keep me from seeing the continuation of the Alien saga. It’s funny that these two franchises have so endeared themselves to me. I grew up watching them (probably at an age far too young) and although their directions have sometimes dumbfounded me, I always have the option of returning back to the originals. Recently, though, I found myself enjoying one of the newest entries and a big reason for that was the efforts put forth by this woman:
I wouldn’t have imagined enjoying Alien: Covenant as much as I did after seeing so many bad reviews of it. I, of course, kept myself from spoiling all of the goodness but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what is going to happen next in these movies. My real surprise came when I didn’t absolutely loathe the character of Daniels, played by Katherine Waterston. She goes through some serious shit over the course of the film and while she has every right to turn into a whining sack of crap she ends up kicking all sorts of ass and redeems the movie in a way that made it “good, not great”.
Daniels is on board the colonization ship Covenant, en route to a planet ripe for human infestation. Sadly, nothing in these movies are what they seem and a quick detour to a paradise planet turns into a really bad day for a ship full of people. Waterston quickly takes a command role as her scientist colleagues succumb to all sorts of gory deaths and we learn that Michael Fassbender will never die.
If you’ve been reluctant to watch this film because Prometheus was a pile of shit (it was) then I have to tell you that Alien: Covenant is worth the time. It still isn’t as good as the original four (yes, I loved Resurrection!) but Waterston and her ingenuity makes it worth your time. Just be prepared, the first hour is slooooow….
