Women of Action: Emilia Clarke – Solo: A Star Wars Story
Ron Howard tried. He really did. He was given the job of making a prequel movie about the backstory to a beloved character that never should have had a prequel movie. Many of the actors in the film are totally blameless. A big part of the reason that Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t connect with fans the way it should have is because it was unwanted and it followed the most controversial movie in the galaxy. Oh well. At least we got to see cute-as-a-button Emilia Clarke in a space movie.
She may have looked more 80’s than she did in the Terminator sequel but Emilia Clarke never looked better to me. She has developed a fan base from Game of Thrones that would rival most other actresses in the world and she finally got the chance to connect Sci-Fi fans the way that she has fans from the fantasy world.
Qi’ra was an old friend and fellow Corellian to Han Solo who found herself in a bit of trouble following the exit of Solo from the planet. Her only chance at survival was to become something that is partly unrecognizable to Han but also something that has evolved with the passing time. She has allied herself with Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany) to the extent that she is now well-known among the criminal element in the galaxy but it doesn’t make it any easier for her to forget her deep-rooted feelings for the smuggler.
Things get kind of wild by the end of the film. Old characters return, new characters establish brand new elements that should have been kept mysterious, and new characters make some big decisions. Solo really felt like a good film that had a tough go at it because of The Last Jedi and the fact that not many people wanted to see the early coming of age tales of Han Solo. I, myself, got a kick out of seeing Clarke and Co. bringing a little fun back to the Star Wars Universe.
