Bullet Points: Range 15
I love it when people bring up movies to me that I have never heard of. I don’t always rush to watch them but I am usually pretty good at finding them before long. Range 15 is a movie that was brought up to me by a friend and you could say I have learned a lot about our relationship based on the type of film that my friend has recommended to me.
Synopsis: A group of veterans wake up after a night of partying to find out that the zombie apocalypse has spread across the United States. Together, they must fight their way across the country in order to find a cure for the outbreak and restore freedom before it’s too late.
- Meet the guys: Range 15 seems to have come about after a group of veterans who were doing videos on YouTube and the like decided to make a military movie a little more in line with what soldiers are really like. As a vet myself, I can say that they didn’t miss the mark by much. Mat Best, Jarred Taylor, Nick Palmisciano, and Vincent Vargas are among the funny ass dudes you’ve probably never heard of that become the zombie-killing machines of Range 15. They wake up in a jail after a night of partying hard and realize the zombie apocalypse is upon them. They couldn’t be more excited.
- More Zombies: Yeah, it’s another zombie comedy. There are probably a dozen of them on every streaming service right now but I have yet to see one anything like Range 15. I am a little biased, no doubt, after having spent a few years playing war and being around plenty of guys who act the same way. I will tell you that if there is a zombie apocalypse in real life you are gonna want some of these guys around.
- Celebrity Cameos: Whatever money was made in that Indiegogo campaign had to have been spent on the celebrity cameos in this movie. William Shatner, Keith David, Sean Astin, Danny Trejo, and Randy Couture. They are totally random and often times very funny.
- Quotes on quotes: “I bet your car watches The View”. “Everything is speculation until you jam your dick into it.” Are these quotes that make you want to watch this movie? If not, you’re probably barking up the wrong tree with Range 15. The movie is 100% dick jokes, ridiculous shooting of zombies, and characters taking great joy in killing. It isn’t for everyone.
- Montages: No action film should ever move forward without at least one montage and the boys in Range 15 take great joy in showing us theirs. The ultimate “gearing up” montage where you can put a shitty song in the background was in 70% of action movies in the 80’s and it deserves to be a thing today.
- Naked Tim Kennedy and the epic finale: Most of the movie has nothing to do with the plot. They find some crazy whiskey/energy drink concoction is the cure for the zombies and then must travel to some scientists that can make more of it. Simple enough. The joy of watching Range 15 has nothing to do with that and more to do with the hilarious and downright disgusting things the men and women do while getting from point A to point B. Stick around for zombie versions of celebrities and some legendary badasses and Medal of Honor recipients show up to close out the movie.
The Verdict: “I feel like I just blacked out on freedom”. It would be insane of me to say that Range 15 is a “Good” movie but I laughed so many times and had lots of fun watching it. It’s definitely a movie that will appeal to a certain crowd. Military guys, law enforcement, or just folks who watch stuff like Super Troopers will probably get a kick out of the jokes in this one. Over 75% of the cast were played by veterans and that is a pretty cool thing. Good on my friend for recommending this one. It was certainly an experience.
