Scene of the Week: Tango & Cash
With a release date of December 22, 1989, Tango & Cash holds the distinction of being the last great action movie of the 1980’s. And it is only fitting that the film combined the talents of two action icons of the decade. Sylvester Stallone, who plays Lt. Raymond Tango, gave us three Rambo movies, two Rocky sequels and Cobra prior to his work in Tango & Cash. And Kurt Russell, who played Lt. Gabriel Cash, starred in a trio of John Carpenter films, 1981’s Escape from New York, 1982’s The Thing and 1986’s Big Trouble in Little China.
The previous accolades of the stars may be one reason some people sleep on the film about two cops who are framed and end up in prison thanks to drug kingpin Yves Perret (Jack Palance). Tango and Cash are forced to work together, despite their differences, to clear their names and bring down Perret in the process.
