Scene of the Week: Gandhi II
“Weird Al” Yankovic has had a very long and successful career thanks to his popular parody and satire songs. It is with that success that I always get disappointed that his theatrical film career is so small. Especially considering how great 1989’s UHF is… at least in my opinion. UHF was not popular at the box office, going up against the likes of Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Lethal Weapon 2 will do that to any film, but has since gone on to be a cult classic.
UHF parodies classic action heroes like Rambo, Indiana Jones, and Conan the Barbarian, however there is always one non action movie that sticks out to me. Imagining a sequel to Gandhi, about the ultimate nonviolent resistance believer, as a gun toting, womanizing action hero (replete with Shaft-esque music) is nothing short of genius. This week’s Scene of the Week takes a look at the trailer for Ghandi II that originally aired on Channel 62.
