Bullet Points: Debt Collectors
Color me surprised when I heard the news Jesse V. Johnson’s The Debt Collector was getting a sequel with both Scott Adkins and Louis Mandylor. If you’ve seen The Debt Collector, you know it ends grim. I enjoyed the hell out of it, but I didn’t think the characters would live another day to kick ass and collect debts. It has never felt this good to be wrong. Without wasting anymore of your time, I give you my bullet points for Debt Collectors.
- The Plot: French (Scott Adkins) and Sue (Louis Mandylor) are back and still breathing. Sue enlists French to help him collect three debts owed to their old boss, Tommy. (Vladimir Kulich) As the debts get paid, the fellas realize all isn’t what it seems and now they have to do everything in their power to survive, so they can make this franchise a trilogy.
- Adkins Acting Over Action: I love Scott Adkins as French. It gives him the opportunity to channel his acting skills. Of course he kicks ass, but we also see the humor in Scott’s French. It is not his fighting ability that’s dominant, but it is his acting. Scott looks like he’s having a blast, and I’m sure he had a lot of fun making this movie. French might just be my favorite Scott Adkins character.
- A Boy Named Sue: Louis Mandylor is a damn great actor. He owned the screen in The Debt Collector, and he does it again in the sequel. The chemistry Louis has with Scott is unreal. Adkins and Mandylor’s back and forth banter is action and comedic gold. Add in the directing talents of Jesse V. Johnson, and Debt Collectors can’t help but be a recipe for success. Jesse is on a role this year. Jesse’s The Mercenary was the first great action movie of 2020, and Debt Collectors keeps his kick ass movie streak going.
- When Best Friends Fist Fight: Hot damn! You gotta love the fist fight French and Sue get into. I definitely had a Nada vs. Frank, They Live vibe. Also, huge credit goes to Louis for keeping up with Scott. Adkins is such an established puncher and kicker, and Louis is able to hold his own. They both make each other look good. That’s how you fight, fellas!
- A Sequel That Doesn’t Suck: If you like action movies that kick ass and chew bubblegum, then Debt Collectors is definitely a movie for you. Action Aficionados should be overjoyed to know Debt Collectors is well worth purchasing, and I can’t wait for the readers of Bulletproof Action to have the chance to see it.
Bonus Bullet Points:
- AKA: Also known as Payback.
- Favorite Quote: “Fuck you, Harry Styles!” said to Scott Adkins by some random guy at a bar. Poor random guy.
- Part 3?: We shall see.
- Score: 4 out of 5 stars
I’m not 100% certain, but I seem to remember them dying in the first film. Action films aren’t always known for their coherence though.
