Scene of the Week: Remembering Kurt Thomas
Shock waves were felt throughout the worlds of action movies and sports when the heartbreaking news that world-champion gymnast and one time action star, Kurt Thomas had died on June 5th. Thomas, who was only 64, had suffered a tear of the basilar artery in the brain stem, causing a severe stroke on May 24th.
Kurt Thomas may have only been a one time action star, but he made the most of that one time starring in the 1985 cult classic, Gymkata. Gymkata stood out from all the other martial arts movies of its time due to the amazing skill set that Thomas brought with him.
Thomas won multiple gold medals over the course of his amateur career and competed for the U.S. team in the 1975 Pan American Games and the 1976 Olympics.
This week’s Scene of the Week is dedicated to the memory of Kurt Thomas. The scene is arguably the most memorable scene from Gymkata, with Kurt Thomas putting his pommel horse skills on display as Thomas’ character, Jonathan Cabot, battles the inhabitants of “The Village of Crazies”…
Our condolences go out to Kurt Thomas’ family, friends and fans.
