5 Questions: Gangs of London (S1 Ep1)
Gangs of London has been on my radar for quite some time. I thought it was coming to Cinemax, but it appears like it will now air on AMC this fall. If you’re in the United States, this will be your first chance to watch. The first season has already aired in the United Kingdom, and Dazzler Media is releasing the Blu-ray to own in the UK. I had the opportunity to view the first episode, and I will share my thoughts with you…
#1. Why is the action community excited for Gangs of London?
Gangs of London is from the mind of Gareth Evans. You know him as the director of The Raid movies. It has been said that there will be no Raid 3, due to Gareth’s involvement with Gangs of London. As an action fan, I’m excited he has put his heart and soul into creating a new series. When you watch the first episode, listen to the music. It has a Raid vibe.
#2. What is Gangs of London about?
The show is about London gangsters. It starts out in a blaze. We see someone get lit on fire, and they die one of the most gruesome deaths in recent memory. We also have a very familiar face meet a very early death. That face is Colm Meaney. He plays Finn Wallace, the head of a powerful crime family. His murder causes his son to step up and run the business. Joe Cole is the son, Sean Wallace, a man who is out for revenge. Right now I’m not sure who Joe can trust. The coolest aspect for me is the introduction of Sope Dirisu’s Elliot Finch. What a character! I’m excited to see what happens with the relationship between Sean and Elliot. I think you will see the twist coming with Elliot’s character. All I will say is almost every great gangster show needs a badass cop in it as well. A cop who isn’t afraid to break the rules.
#3. What is the focus of the first episode?
Episode one is mainly about Joe dealing with the death of his father and the introduction of Elliot. We also have the father / son duo of Ed and Alexander Dumani. They are lifelong friends of the family, and in many ways, they are family. However, you are definitely in for a shock near the end of the episode, and this shock definitely sets up the season. The first episode also runs over 90 minutes, so it is like a mini movie.
#4. What about the action?
Do you like pub fights? Of course you do. While the show isn’t nonstop action, there are a couple of scenes with Elliot that are straight outta The Raid. You see Gareth Evans’ influence, and it should make you excited.
#5. Do I want to watch the rest of the series?
Hell to the Yes! I don’t think I can wait for the episodes to air on AMC, and since I do own a region free Blu-ray player, I’m definitely going to order and binge the hell out of Gangs of London.
Are you excited for Gangs of London? Have you already seen the series? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter. I only watched a tease, and I can’t wait for the payoff.
