Scene of the Week: The Rock – Shower Room Shootout
Michael Bay changed the action genre in the late 90’s like none other. Bad Boys, Armageddon, and The Rock are among the best films to come out in their respective years and they all have that definitive Bay flair. He’s a man who has mastered the art of BAYHEM and it doesn’t take long to figure out that you’re watching a Michael Bay film once all of his vintage camera movements start happening.
The scene below from 1996’s The Rock is one of my favorite scenes from a film full of awesomeness. In it, the SEAL team led by Michael Biehn gets trapped and has their position totally overpowered by Ed Harris and his army of mercenaries. It’s not the flashy, wildly edited, and crazy explosion scenes that we’re used to from a Bay film but it stuffs a whole bunch of character development alongside the action. We learn so much about what makes these guys tick just by how they react to the chaos. If nothing else, it really makes me want to go on a 90’s Bay Marathon!
