Scene of the Week: Johnny Cage vs Goro
Mortal Kombat has no business being an entertaining movie. It is based on an arcade game that features a fantastical plot and characters. But I don’t care because it was so cool to see the characters from the game in a movie and Mortal Kombat (with thanks to the actors) somehow turns these game characters into extremely likeable martial arts ass kickers. For example, Johnny Cage is supposed to be the self absorbed actor, but in the hands of Linden Ashby he becomes a very easy to root for protagonist.
This week’s Scene of the Week takes a look at Johnny Cage taking on his biggest competitor, the quad-armed Goro. If there is one move that everyone remembers about Johnny Cage from the video game is the splits nut punch and you better believe that he uses it on the half man half dragon and I have always loved Raiden’s pure glee reaction to the low blow. I suppose Goro deserves it for disrespecting Cage’s expensive shades. The fight then goes to places that were never possible in the game, but ends with a very pithy quip, and just one of the scenes that makes Mortal Kombat enjoyable (and I still haven’t mentioned that song).
