Bullet Points: Below Zero
Netflix has decided to make 2021 the year of the original motion picture. They are producing a ton of films, and I am sure a lot will get lost in the shuffle.
The top contenders for the ones that might get lost are the films from other countries. You know, the subtitled movies. Fortunately, subtitles have never stopped me from watching a film. I like movies from all over the globe.
Today, I am virtually traveling to Spain to bring you the inside scoop on Below Zero. I hope this is the first of many foreign films I review this year that will exclusively premiere on Netflix. I love to travel, even if I can only travel in my mind right now…
- The Plot: Think Assault on Precinct 13 meets Con-Bus. A caravan carrying some of the most dangerous criminals in all of Spain is attacked by an unknown source. Martín (Javier Gutiérrez), is the cop driving the van. It is up to Martín to try to survive the night. Not only is there trouble on the outside, but Martín also has to face the trouble from within: The prisoners he is transporting. Can Martín somehow live to see tomorrow? Or will his first day on the job, be his last?
- The Weather: Did you know it gets cold in Spain? I had no clue. The movie is called Below Zero for a reason: Baby, it is cold outside. The ice and snow make it hard to see what is going on. Martín has no clue if he is being attacked by one or a hundred bad guys. The weather will play a vital role throughout the film. It becomes another obstacle in Martín’s chance of survival.
- The Prisoners: We have a group of prisoners being transported to another prison, and of course, they decide to do the transfer in the middle of the night. You get to know each prisoner, but don’t get too attached to some of them. We do have a lot of death. People will die, and they will die in many different ways. It is best if I don’t go into detail about each prisoner, you need to watch and pay attention as the story unfolds.
- Final Thoughts: Below Zero isn’t nonstop action, but it is nonstop adrenaline. The characters are fighting to survive. They will face many obstacles to have a chance at another day. Below Zero had me on the edge. I was invested with the story, and I can’t help but highly recommend you watch. 4 stars!
