Ryan Shoots First: WandaVision (S1 Ep5) “On a Very Special Episode…”
After some shocking revelations last week we confirmed Wanda is behind everything going on in Westview and is essentially holding the entire town hostage in her Sitcom Doll House. Vision is totally dead and Twitter really let me down with the lack of Weekend at Bernie’s memes.
Leading Theories
Last week’s episode confirmed more questions than it asked but this week Elizabeth Olsen made waves when she said this week’s episode would see a shocking surprise guest on par with Luke showing up in the season finale of The Mandalorian. Speculation is abound some thinking it will be her brother, some the X-Men being introduced into the MCU and some think Tony Stark as there was drama a few months ago about him showing up in some series and whether he approved it or not. So let’s all find out together!!
Episode Recap
This week we are in the 80’s sitcoms and I love the playful intro music with the wide shot of the house to start the episode. Vision and Wand are struggling as the twins are crying non-stop. Agnes shows up in her super 80’s Jazzercise outfit. Agnes has some tricks up her sleeve, she has a small moment where she breaks character, Agnes asks if they should take it from the top as Vision doesn’t want Agnes to hold the babies. Nice touch of when everything broke the crying stopped. Vision, noticing something is up, tries to talk to Wanda about it. The crying stops and Wanda and Vision turn around to have 2 toddlers.
After the 80’s sitcom intro we transition back to the outside where Monica is being questioned by doctors after being expelled from Westveiw. Her scans are not showing anything, doctors maintain it’s just an issue with the scanners. Hayward thinks Wanda is a terrorist and Rambeu maintains she is not doing this deliberately. Hayward reveals that days ago Wanda stormed the SWORD headquarters and stole Visions body. Vision is growing ever more curious of what’s going on as Agnes is not phased by Wanda’s powers, the boys age up to 10 years old when Wanda and Vision tell them they can’t have a puppy until they are 10.
Outside Wu, Monica and Dari discuss how Monica can safely get back into Westview. They discover Wanda is changing matter itself with her powers, it is not just an illusion. Vision somehow receives an email from Darci on the outside and realizes something is wrong, he phases Norm out of his loop and he begs Vision to make her stop and it hurts. Vision phases him back into his role. Wanda at home is drawn outside as Wanda hears a drone flying overhead. Monica uses it to try and speak to Wanda but Hayward orders her men to take the shot. Wanda destroys the drone and then walks out of the Hex to confront SWORD and tell them to leave her alone.
Back into the episode the boys discover that their dog has passed away from getting into Agnes’s bushes. The boys want Wanda to bring the dog back to life but Wanda is reluctant although she is implying she does have the ability. Vision confronts Wanda about the discussion with Norm. He tells her she can’t control him the way she does them, Wanda tries to roll the credits on the episode but the argument moves into the living room where we go to the 16:9 ratio and Vision and Wanda have it out. Vision asks why there are no other children in Westview. Wanda reveals she does not know how any of this started in the first place. Just then the doorbell rings, Wanda maintains she did not do that and goes to answer the door. As she opens the door we cut back to the outside, we see a gray head and it is Quicksilver but not Pietro we know from the MCU it is Quicksilver from the Fox movies played by Evan Peters. Holy crap Wanda really has broken the multiverse and brought in the Fox X-Men… this is all so meta and Canon it is head spinning. The episode ends.
I have to give them credit for coming up with quite possibly the most creative way to break the multiverse and bring in the Fox properties Disney bought. Bravo to the whole team working this out in such a creative way.
Observations
- How this show had like 6 complete sitcom sets is so impressive.
- I’m so here for the intro for this episode and Baby Vision photos. It’s perfect
- The “oversimplification” of the events scene is fun as we recap and break some 4th walls.
- I love how Wu and Darci are like MCU nerds living in the MCU, they geek out over new developments and discuss lore and power sets of the various Avengers. They will probably host a podcast in universe after this ordeal.
- Now that we are merging the real world, the pseudo world in the hex and the storyline sitcom stuff it’s getting trippy.
- The “Lagos” commercial is a reference to the accident in Civil War where Wanda is the cause of an explosion killing innocent people. The commercial references cleaning up a mess you didn’t intend to make.
- Love the touch of Wanda trying to roll the credits on the episode to end Vision confronting her.
- Thought that was old Steve Rogers at first.
- Nice by Darci about the recasting.
- This show is so Meta…
- So Evan Peters was the big reveal…maybe not Luke levels but still huge and has some big ramifications for the future of the MCU.
- This show continues to impress I fear for the coming Falcon Winter Soldier show, I imagine it will feel more like a movie when this has been SO SO different from anything else we’ve seen.
