Bullet Points: Red Dot
My Netflix journey across the globe continues with Red Dot. This time, I’m traveling to the mountains of Sweden. Netflix has been on a roll with the Spanish action thriller, Below Zero and the shockingly hilarious, All My Friends Are Dead from Poland. Let’s find out if Netflix keeps the momentum rolling with Red Dot…
- The Plot: A newly married couple attempts to save their rocky marriage by going on a holiday in the mountains of Sweden. The couple will soon find out they’re not alone in the mountains. Will their marriage survive the terror that is waiting for them? Red Dot stars Anastasios Soulis (David) and Nanna Blondell (Nadja) as the couple fighting to survive. It is written and directed by Alain Darborg.
- The Happy Couple: We learn early in Red Dot that David and Nadja got engaged in a public restroom. What a way to start a marriage! David has a career that keeps him busy, and Nadja is studying to be a doctor. They don’t have a lot of free time to spend with each other and it shows in their marriage. They are quickly headed to divorce court if a lot of things don’t change. Why not go on a nice hike in the mountains? What could possibly be hiding in the snow? Red Dot also has the classic “The wife is pregnant and doesn’t quite know how to tell the husband” plot storyline. What I noticed the most about this couple is Nadja is the alpha and David is the beta. Nadja is strong. David is weak. Nadja picks a fight with the locals. David runs away from conflict. Obviously, I like Nadja more than David.
- The Red Dot: So, what is the Red Dot? Without giving anything away, it is the laser on the gun used to hunt David and Nadja. The couple have a run in with some rough looking locals at a gas station and their car is vandalized with a racial slur written across it. Nadja gets her revenge by keying the car of one of the racist locals. Red Dot wants you to believe the local asshat racists are the ones hunting David and Nadja. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t. I’m not telling.
- The Action: Red Dot is loaded with pulse pounding tension and action. The couple face a lot of obstacles while trying to survive their night in the snow. As the movie unfolds, the audience might be in for a shocking twist or two. Red Dot for the most part has a very familiar plot. However, the last act is why we watch movies. I like the film. I love the ending. I have no problem giving Red Dot my highest recommendation. 4 stars! Red Dot premieres globally on Netflix on February 11th.
