Scene of the Week: Unhappy Meal
I am undecided on whether sequels that come out after many years after the original is a good thing. Generally, the sequel can’t hold up to the original, but the news of the new film brings the original back to the forefront. Coming to America is a must see 1988 comedy starring Eddie Murphy as a Zamundan prince looking for his bride in NYC. The 2021 sequel was a long time coming, as I choose to ignore the failed 1989 television pilot. Will Coming 2 America be considered a classic in over twenty years from now? Only time will tell, but props to the creative use of 2 in the title and it in no way takes away from the greatness of the original.
This week’s Scene of the Week takes place in McDowell’s, the fast food restaurant that Eddie Murphy’s Akeem and his friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall) work at. It is a very busy day at the eatery with Akeem’s love interest Lisa (Shari Headley), her boyfriend Darryl (Eriq La Salle) and even Louie Anderson behind the counter all being interrupted by Samuel L. Jackson trying hold-up the place. Akeem is able to diffuse the situation with a thrashing while impressing Lisa and Darryl showing his true colors.
