Ryan Shoots First: WandaVision (S1 Ep9) “The Series Finale”
Here we go, after weeks of mystery, intrigue and speculation WandaVision looks to be coming down to the standard CGI color fight! So let’s get to it and see if it has any surprises in store. Before we get started the big fan theory of the week is that the Gray Vision will actually be Ultron with James Spader himself doing the voice. Vision’s actor Paul Bettany also stirred things up when he went on and promised some big returns only to reveal he meant himself… or did he? Let’s find out!
We pick up from last week with Wanda knocking down Agatha and freeing the boys, Agatha is attempting to take Wanda’s magic from here and she can keep Westview. Wanda responds by throwing a car at her. After finding her boots empty under the car Grey Vision shows up and begins killing Wanda but then her Vision shows up and takes him out. Pietro has Monica held in his room as Vision battles Vision the Grey and the Witches go at it. Wu is back with SWORD and Hayward is revealing his master plan when Wu tells him the FBI is on the way. Back in town Agatha has freed everyone from Wanda’s trance and they are not happy about it. Monica discovers Pietro is actually some dude named Ralph that Agatha is controlling. Wanda accidentally starts choking out the whole town when they press her to let them be and Wanda takes down the Hex to free them.
SWORD enters the chat now that the barrier is down but Vision and her kids are breaking down as she removes the Hex. She must choose. She puts it back up for the time being and the family unites in the town square. Vision does the old give the machine a paradox technique when he tells Grey Vis he is not really Vision who he is programmed to destroy. Outside the boys take on the military. Hayward goes to shoot the boys but Monica steps in to save them and Darci takes him out with her Milk truck. Vision gets through to Grey Vis with a thought experiment about and old ship and if you slowly replace every plank is it actually the same ship anymore? Androids am I right? Vision awakens all the memories in Grey Vision who is back. While looking on Wanda sneaks up on Agatha and gets in her head. She takes her back to when she was tied up by her coven and Wanda brings them all back to life but they turn on Wanda and tie her to the stake. The two start throwing light balls at each other and Wanda is losing her power. As Wanda is drained of her power Agatha tries to finish her off but cannot. There are giant runes on the walls of the Hex and now Agatha cannot use her magic. Wanda transforms into the full Scarlet Witch costume and drains Agatha. Wanda decides to leave Agatha in Westview in the role of the noisy neighbor. Wanda removes the Hex as they return home. They put the kids in bed and tell them how proud they are of them. As the Hex walls close in on the house Wanda thanks them for choosing her to be their mom. Back downstairs Vision and Wanda hold hands as the world is set back. Vision asks her “What am I?” and Wanda tells him he is the piece of the mind stone that lives in her. Her sadness and her hope but mostly her love. They say good bye and Wanda is once again alone. Wanda goes back to town square and talks to Monica in the ire of all the townspeople. She tells her she doesn’t understand her power but she will and she flies off as the credits roll.
We do get a post credit scene where Wu is running the cleanup. Monica is asked to be seen in the theatre and a Kree is there. She tells her she was sent by an old friend of her mothers and would like to meet her in space. I am assuming this is the real Nick Fury who we know is in space after the events of Spiderman Far From Home.
But wait there is another Post-Post Credits scene with Wanda in the mountains in a cabin sipping tea but as we pann pass this Wanda we see the Scarlet Witch hovering reading the book Agatha had when she hears the voices of her children cry out and the episode ends.
The episode felt a little rushed compared to how slow everything else in the season felt but in the end I think it was a satisfying conclusion that fit with the theme. It simply wasn’t possible for Wanda to get everything she wanted and her coping with her grief and the consequences of her actions was a nice turn. The way this show tackled things like trauma, grief, loss and love was really inspiring. The messy and sadness that sometimes comes with love is hard to convey but the show really did it by playing off the years of lore built in the MCU with these characters. Bravo to Marvel and Disney for really thinking about as far out of the box as they have with this show and putting a lot of thought and care into the main characters. I imagine Winter Solder and Falcon will be a VERY different show.
