Bullet Points: Cosmic Sin
If there is a new Bruce Willis or Frank Grillo movie, there is a great chance I will be the reviewer covering it for Bulletproof Action. Cosmic Sin features both Willis and Grillo. This is a two-for-one review. How lucky can one writer get?
- The Legal Stuff: Saban Films presents Cosmic Sin. It opens in Theaters, On Demand and On Digital on Friday, March 12th.
- The Plot: Cosmic Sin is set in the year 2524. Aliens invade. General James Ford (Bruce Willis) and General Eron Ryle (Frank Grillo) lead a team of rogue soldiers to save civilization. Cosmic Sin is written and directed by Edward Drake. It also stars: Brandon Thomas Lee, Corey Large, C.J. Perry, Lochlyn Munro and Costas Mandylor.
- Lazy Bruce Willis: Lazy Bruce Willis is a term of admiration. I admire Bruce Willis for getting paid while doing as little as possible. There is a scene early on showing Bruce walking into a bar. I am 99.9% sure Bruce used a walking double. Bruce might start a barroom brawl, but he then sits down to grab a cold beer while the younger crowd fights it out. Bruce is not the main character in Cosmic Sin, but his role is more than a cameo. He has scenes throughout the film. He must have worked at least a week on set. I would give Bruce’s laziness 3 out of 5 pillows in Cosmic Sin.
- Why does this look so familiar?: I wondered why Cosmic Sin reminded me so much of Bruce’s previous film, Breach? Then the magic ding went off in my head and I realized both films share the same writer. Edward Drake helped write Breach and here he is writing and directing Cosmic Sin. He is a smart man, because I swear, they used the same set pieces for both films. Were both films made on the same greenscreen? IMDb says Breach is a Canadian film and Cosmic Sin was made in the USA, but I can not get over how similar both films appear to be. Perhaps, they both used the same roll of digital film? If I am to be a mean movie critic, I would point out how dark a lot of the scenes looked. It was hard to see at times. Maybe, it was on purpose? Also, like Breach, Cosmic Sin focuses on an actor you might not be familiar with. Brandon Thomas Lee is the lead. He plays a hotshot solider with a temper to boot.
- The Action: Are you still with me? The action is not anything I would write home about. It is sloppy at best and a hot mess at worst. I can not recall a memorable action sequence. The alien plot is still a headscratcher for me. These aliens are boring as watching paint dry. The action is definitely not Bulletproof in Cosmic Sin.
- Conclusion: I made it through the entire review without talking about Frank Grillo. Take that for how I feel his character was treated. I thought it was odd people were driving cars made in 2001 in the year 2524. Talk about “Built Ford Tough”. Overall, Cosmic Sin goes great with Breach, but perhaps, it is best left unwatched if you are not a superfan of the Lazy Bruce Willis genre. I did not hate the film, but it is hard for me to name a lot of things I liked about it. I am scared to see how low the IMDb score will be.
