Bullet Points: Undercover Punch & Gun
Hi-YAH!, the Martial Arts streaming channel has a lot of cool action films. If you are a fan of Hong Kong action, you should seriously consider subscribing to Hi-YAH!. Undercover Punch & Gun is now streaming on Hi-YAH!, and if you are a fan of physical media, Well GO USA will release the Blu-ray and DVD on June 8th. Let us see if Undercover Punch & Gun packs an action uppercut or if it is a total dud.
- The Plot: I do not know what is worse, the title of the film or trying to explain the plot. There is no rocket science in Undercover Punch & Gun. It is a story of an undercover cop (Philip Ng) and his fight against a ruthless drug dealer (Andy On). The film also stars Vanness Wu as Tiger, and it features cameos from familiar faces such as Suet Lam and Nicholas Tse. My biggest takeaway is this film was made a few years back. It did not get a release in Hong Kong until 2019 and it is finally seeing a release in the States in 2021. Was this film lost in limbo or is it simply not a good film? I can see an argument for both.
- The Action: What Undercover Punch & Gun lacks in plot; it tries its best to make up for in action. Philip Ng is a legit fighter. He rarely is the lead like he is in this. He is probably more known for his friendship with Nicholas Tse. Between Ng and Andy On, you have yourself a pair of believable leads. I also like how these guys are acting all Jackie Chan by doing their own stunts. Speaking of stunts, even if his Tiger character might rub you the wrong way, Vanness Wu is bananas at times jumping on cars or using a knife like a boss. Again, the humor gets in the way of him stealing the show. His meth dance is like a trainwreck. You cannot help but watch.
- More Action: My favorite performance is from Andy On. He plays the heavy with ease and he has more charisma than the entire cast combined. I like it when a final fight features two good guys vs one bad guy, because the bad guy is so damn hard to kill. Overall, I was pleased with the fights. You can tell the cast did not hold nothing back when filming the fights.
- Final Judgment: Undercover Punch & Gun is a mixed bag for me. It packs a punch, but it suffers from an inconsistent plot and shady CG effects. There are a lot of films I would rather watch from this genre, but it is still watchable if you choose to stream on Hi-YAH! or rent on digital. I would make sure to give it a watch before I bought in on physical media. I believe some will really enjoy, but I also believe a lot will find the same faults I did.
