Bullet Points: The Misfits (2021)
Renny Harlin has directed some very entertaining Hollywood blockbusters in his career. He has also had his fair share of duds. For every Die Hard 2 there is a Skiptrace. What category will The Misfits fall in? Look for The Misfits in Theaters on June 11th and on VOD June 15th. #TheMisfitsMovie
- Robin Hood: The plot for The Misfits is about as straightforward as it gets: A team of modern day Robin Hoods who call themselves The Misfits, recruit a master thief to steal a ton of gold from a prison in a foreign country. Richard Pace (Pierce Brosnan) is the international thief. Ringo (Nick Cannon), Prince (Rami Jaber), Violet (Jamie Chung) and Wick (Mike Angelo) are The Misfits. They also get help from Pace’s daughter, Hope (Hermione Corfield). Every movie needs a villain, and shady businessman, Schultz (Tim Roth) seems to be having a blast as the baddie looking to not lose his gold.
- Why is this movie Rated R?: I love R-rated action movies. I grew up on them and I am more likely to watch R than anything else. I feel a bit cheated with The Misfits’ R rating. There is only one reason, and that reason is Nick Cannon’s vocabulary. He cannot complete a sentence without adding a 4-letter word to it. I am all for swearing, but I feel let down that we did not have anything gratuitous in The Misfits. Where are my Nick Cannon fans at?
- Heist over Action: From the trailer it appeared The Misfits was trying to be Fast and Furious in the Sand. I expected a lot of action and cool car chases. We get some action and cars going zoom, but the film is way more heist than action spectacular. That is not to say the film is not entertaining. I was entertained, but I never was overly excited while watching. You can tell the screenwriters are not politically correct, because they did not care what they said during the film. I am sure some people might be offended by some of the vocabulary used, but of course, I am not one of them. I also have a feeling this movie will be destroyed by most critics. Why? Because this is not a film most critics will embrace. They will find more faults than I have. I can almost guarantee it. I also have a feeling the audience that decides to watch will mostly enjoy. Pierce Brosnan fans will get their 007 kick, Nick Cannon fans will be Nick Cannon fans and Renny Harlin fans will be remembering the past. I hope everyone who watches The Misfits at the movies has fun eating their weight in popcorn and tasty treats.
- Wrapping it all up: I wish I enjoyed The Misfits more. I wish I could easily recommend you run to the movies as fast as you can to watch. In good news, I was never bored while watching. The 90 minute runtime helps, but I wish the film had more thrills and excitement. I do see some potential in The Misfits, but I am not ready to call it Renny Harlin’s comeback movie. I believe The Misfits will dominate your local Redbox, but it will bomb at the box office like its name is Ford Fairlane.
