Bullet Points: The Forever Purge
The Purge franchise feels like it will live on forever. I guess you could not come up with a more appropriate title for the next installment than The Forever Purge. Be on the lookout for The Forever Purge when it hits theaters on July 2nd, courtesy of Universal Pictures.
- I Thought They Got Rid of The Purge: This is an easy one to explain: A change in government power brings the Purge back, but this time, it lasts after the final horn goes off. A new domestic terrorist group is determined to keep the Purge going until the Energizer Bunny calls it quits. Our heroes led by Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta and Josh Lucas must make it to the Mexico border for safety before it is too late. The Forever Purge also stars Will Patton, Cassidy Freeman, Leven Rambin and Alejandro Edda. Everardo Gout serves as the director, and it is written by long-time Purge author and creator, James DeMonaco.
- Action Over Politics: Maybe I am numb from COVID and everything else 2020 and beyond has brought, but I thought this installment of the Purge was action over politics. You know the message DeMonaco and Gout are sending. It is obvious. At the same time, the action is everywhere. The “good” guys are in a firefight for their lives. Once the Forever Purge starts, the action does not let up. You like the characters you are supposed to like, and you have distaste for the asshats running around killing everyone. The only character with any real depth is Josh Lucas’ Dylan Tucker. Lucas displays his acting range quite nicely and his conversations with Tenoch Huerta’s Juan are the most in-depth and meaningful from the movie. I am sure there will be a debate about Dylan Tucker’s true feelings, but that is a conversation for another day. I also want to point out Ana de la Reguera’s badassery. Her Adela character is a fighter, and I like how they explain why she is such a badass.
- Final Thoughts: The Forever Purge is exciting from start to finish. It has its share of social commentary you would expect when dealing with issues such as racism and immigration, but it is also one entertaining badass action movie. These Purge films are made for far less than most other films and they always turn a profit. I expect the same from The Forever Purge.
- Grade: B+
Bonus Bullet Points
- Favorite quote: “Fuck you, Redneck!” – Said by Dylan Tucker to someone that deserved it.
- My IMDb Prediction: Something I want to try to do is guess where the IMDb score will eventually be. IMDb is not rocket science, but it does give you an idea how the masses feel about a film. Looking at The Final Purge I believe you will have some people vote real high or real low just because. I do see it getting a higher average score than The First Purge, but I doubt it settles in with a score higher than Anarchy or Election Year. I mean, we have no Frank Grillo in this one. But, we do have a lot of great action. So with all that, my guess is 5.7 / 10.
