Scene of the Week: No Retreat, No Surrender 3
Death scenes in action movies are inevitable, especially the R rated variety. There are just too many bullets flying, swords swooshing, blades cutting and things exploding to avoid casualties.
There are several categories you could put action movie death scenes in… The heartbreaking death scenes where a hero or innocent victim meets their demise… The desensitizing death scenes where nameless baddies get mowed down by the good guys… The stand up and cheer death scenes where the main villain has a grandiose and unforgettable death… And the holy shit death scenes where no matter who the victim is, you can’t believe your eyes and have to rewind the movie to confirm what you just saw happen, happened.
One death scene that is equal parts holy shit and heartbreaking can be found in 1990’s No Retreat, No Surrender 3: Blood Brothers. The film stars Loren Avedon and Keith Vitali as Will Alexander and Casey Alexander respectively, the sons of CIA legend, John Alexander (Joseph Campanella, Hologram Man).
After enjoying his birthday party along side his sons and friends, John Alexander is relaxing at home when Franco (Rion Hunter), a ghost from John Alexander’s past, shows up looking for misguided revenge. John Alexander proves he still has plenty of fight in him, but the numbers game catches up with John and he goes out in a blaze of glory. I dare you not to watch this week’s Scene of the Week more than once…
