Ryan Shoots First: What If… Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark? (S1 Ep6)
As fun as it is to look at a bonkers alternate reality like last week’s Zombie episode I have really enjoyed the episodes that just slightly differ from the MCU we know and love. This week was may be the most subtle change we have seen yet.
In this week’s episode we see what would have happened had Eric Killmonger rescued Tony Stark in the desert. What I liked most about this episode is even though the circumstances changed we see the motivations and in many ways the core of who a character is is still there. You can see this especially in Tony. He doesn’t obviously go through the ordeal that makes him Iron Man but we see brief glimpses of that person in other actions he does in the episode. On the flipside Killmonger who was the cold calculated villain in Black Panther is still there just in different ways. This episode featured some awesome action shots both with large open field battles and some great sequences with the Dora Milaje who maintain to be some of the most badass warriors in the MCU. I do have to say the voice actor replacing Tony was maybe the weakest of the recast roles but everyone else in the episode was great.
SPOILER DISCUSSION
Killmonger was Killmonger and while it was great seeing him flex even more of his mental warfare and organized chaos I liked Tony the most in this episode. There was some elements there of the Tony we know he even mentioned the troubling nature of seeing soldiers killed by his weapons but without his experience in the cave it didn’t quite go to the level we know. Without being left to himself he just outsourced all that motivation to Killmonger. Kind of a bummer to see the episode end on a cliffhanger with Shuri and Pepper teaming up but the focus of the episode was Eric. So far we have not seen any two parters in the series so as far as we know the story will not go on. Still I enjoyed this week’s episodes and as a big time Gundam fan I loved the shout out and mech action. All though they did seem super weak. Fire a missile for God Sakes!
Observations
- They’ve done a great job with the fill in voice actors but Tony’s….. eeek
- That said whenever they have to recreate a scene from the movie they nail it.
- I get Killmonger is kinda the focus but just a What If Tony didn’t become iron man I super interesting
- Also the first time we’ve seen Don Cheadle as Rhodes from IM 1 they’ve never really acknowledged the recasting.
- I thought Gundam… then Tony said Gundam. I’m happy.
- I like the episodes that show our characters are still who we remember but just slight changes.
- The woods shot was very cool but Game of Thrones did it.
- This has all confirmed how great of a villain Killmonger was. The way he played all the angles I have no idea of his end goal. Y
- Kinda lame ending.
