Ryan Shoots First: Hawkeye (S1 Ep5) “Ronin”
Welcome to this week’s episode of “Is Ryan still on fire for Hawkeye?!” The answer is a resounding YES and that’s thanks to Florence Pugh. This show has such amazing pacing, episode to episode, scene to scene from serious to light hearted… inserting new reveals and threats at the perfect time. Yelena’s story and her conversation with Kate was the highlight of the episode. And let it be known I noted all that before the very end of the episode blasted us with another big time reveal!!!
So yes, I’m still in love with this show and I try not to spoil anything outside the observations so it makes it hard to talk about, but this episode is high on drama. Clint’s survivor’s guilt and his wish to atone for his past is weighing heavy on him as the walls of the criminal underworld close around him. Not to mention the overarching story that I really want to see him get home for Christmas. There is a great moment where he is alone at the monument to the Battle of New York where he speaks directly to Natasha and removes his hearing aid making the moment all the more impactful as the background noise dissipates. Even with the episode being a lot heavier and the series itself getting heavier as the story goes on, Kate still manages to bring her wit and charm to the episode. This episode is lighter in action but features a few powerful conversations that had me hooked to the screen. The episodes fly by as you’re so invested in all the tentacles branching out from the story. The tracksuits, Kate and Clint’s relationship, Clint’s relationship with his family, Kate’s family ties to whatever’s going on, add in the Black Widow assassins and the big reveal at the end and there is a lot of plates spinning and the show does a good job of keeping the plates moving.
I can’t stress enough how shocked I am to be loving this show so much. I enjoyed Wanda Vision and Loki very much but I honestly don’t feel an overwhelming sense to go watch them again. I can easily see myself watching this show or at least certain episodes again. While it has some great reveals it doesn’t hold the show up. As great as Loki was, it lived and thrived in the week in between the show with wild theories and breakdowns. Hawkeye lives in the hour or so it’s on your TV and it’s wildly entertaining. I can’t wait to see how it wraps up in the coming weeks.
