Ryan Shoots First: Hawkeye (S1 Ep6) “So This Is Christmas?”
Hawkeye settles in for it’s finale right in time for Christmas but will Clint make it home in time? If you’ve read any of my previous reviews you know I have really loved this show. It’s been one of my favorite surprises in a while. The finale took everything great about the show’s previous 5 episodes and tied it all up in a nice bow. The wit and charm, the heart and the action was all on display in a satisfying conclusion. With so many threads to wrap up it can be hard to give everything a satisfying pay off but Hawkeye managed to do just that. Whether it be the storyline of Kate and her family’s underworld troubles or Clint and the ghosts of Ronin, or Clint and the ghosts of Nat in the form of Yelena. So much going on and everything was given proper respect.
The big reveal at the end of last week’s episode was the return of Vincent D’onofrio’s KingPin from the Daredevil Netflix series. He was as menacing and commanding as ever and really showed why he is held up as one of the best MCUs villains over the years. The shows stars continued to be the anchors though among returning favorites like KingPin and Yelena Clint and Kate held down the fort and were the heart of the show. There scenes together were terrific but they are both great apart as well dealing with their own side stories inside the all encompassing main story. Renner really shines as the grizzled vet who is too old for this but has “one last ride” all the time it seems. I am not sure if he is done in the MCU or not but as a mentor character that we first saw glimpses of in Age of Ultron he is perfect.
The action in the finale was also great with an amazing set piece set at Rockefeller Center and the famous giant christmas tree. Kate and Clint literally empty their bag of trick arrows in what was a fun and harrowing scene on the ice rink. I still feel the car chase from a few episodes ago was my favorite action scene of the series but this was a satisfying conclusion to the season. While the show does have a very entertaining post credit scene it is unsure where many of the characters in the show stand going forward. There wasn’t a big tease for the future and looking at upcoming projects it is unclear where we may see some of them again. Honestly, I am ok with that, it’s become a bit of a side show to only focus on next instead of what we’re watching and with such an amazing show like this I kinda like it being somewhat self contained and just being what it is. I’m sure we’ll see all of them again, especially Yelena and Kate but this will be a rewatch for me for sure next Christmas.
I assume if you are reading this you have been following the show but if you just clicked on the finale to see what happened so you don’t have to watch it to keep up with the MCU timeline I really recommend watching the show. It’s a short 6 episodes that flies by and is so entertaining you will not regret it if you are any fan of the MCU. So to that person… Merry Christmas!
