Bullet Points: Off Limits (1988)

You know how you have memories when you were younger that you swear are true? Vivid scenes play out in your head, and to this day, you are certain of their factuality. This is the case with Off Limits. I swear I remember seeing Off Limits in an HBO guide back in the day. I wanted to watch it so very much. But for some reason, the movie was off limits to me. 

Today I had the opportunity to finally watch Off Limits. There’s a couple older DVD’s, but there isn’t a Blu-ray or a digital release in the USA. While doing some extensive time-consuming research, I did discover a Blu-ray from a Nordic country. It is either from Denmark, Finland or Sweden. My knowledge of flags isn’t at expert status. It is also a region locked title, so it would be great for a studio to release Off Limits on Blu. Shout might have the rights, so there’s hope. 

• Saigon: Also known throughout the world as Saigon, Off Limits is a Vietnam war movie about a pair of Military policemen (Willem Dafoe and Gregory Hines) investigating a series of hooker murders. When it is almost certain the serial killer is a high-ranking Army officer, you know the shit is going to hit the fan. Off Limits also stars Fred Ward, Amanda Pays and Scott Glenn. It is directed by Christopher Crowe. 

• The Stache: Fred Ward’s mustache is reason alone to watch. Fred plays Dafoe and Hines’ boss. You know, every buddy cop movie needs a boss. He is the equivalent of Inspector Todd in Beverly Hills Cop. Fred Ward is a favorite here at Bulletproof Action, and I can honestly say his role is one of his best. 

• Grabbing Balls: I love Gregory Hines. Running Scared (1986) and Off Limits make the perfect double feature if you’re a fan. He doesn’t tap dance, but he sure does grab a lot of dicks and talk about putting his mouth on some big ole boobs. He is the more insane of the duo of cops. Off Limits is my favorite performance from Gregory Hines. 

• The Pink Pussy: Willem Dafoe falls for a nun (Amanda Pays) and they go to a strip club known as the Pink Pussy to talk with a potential murder witness. Dafoe wants to bang a nun, and there’s a Pink Pussy strip club. Who wouldn’t want to watch. It is crazy that Dafoe is the less insane of the partners. 

• Fucked Up Helicopter: I’ve seen some fucked up action scenes in my life, but Scott Glenn going absolute bonkers in a helicopter might take the cake. Off Limits gives you the list of suspects, and Scott is definitely one of them. If you don’t say “What the fuck” after the helicopter scene, then you ain’t human. 
• Wrapping it Up: Off Limits doesn’t glorify war. Saigon Vietnam looks like Hell on Earth. The action is exciting. The mystery has a great twist. Did I mention the Pink Pussy strip club? I am so glad I was finally able to watch. I definitely recommend Off Limits to all my Action Fanatics.
