Scene of the Week: Watermelon Massacre
Charles Bronson has played some characters that have been through some things. Paul Kersey in the Death Wish franchise has seen his wife, daughter, maid, lover, lover’s daughter all killed and he usually takes it the same way, a stoic outward appearance that leads to vigilantism. He might be upset on the inside but on the outside it looks like what happens when I knock over my glass of water. I’m upset but I just go back and fill it up again and I’m right back at it like nothing happened. You might think that is just Charles Bronson being Charles Bronson, but I direct you to Mr. Majestyk. I have never seen a Charles Bronson character show so much emotion after a shooting, and no one had to die this time.
This week’s Scene of the Week takes a look at Al Lettieri’s Frank Renda getting revenge on Charles Bronson’s watermelon farming Vince Majestyk by completely massacring his crop of juicy melons. The anguish in Chuck’s eyes is enough to bring tears to the eyes of even the hardest of you chunks of coal. Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” as the added soundtrack just lays the emotion on even thicker. Excuse me for a second, I think some dust got in my eye…
