Bullet Points: A Day to Die
Red flags immediately went up when I was informed A DAY TO DIE would not be sending out digital screeners for review consideration. Would that stop me from giving the Action Fanatics the Pillow Meter? Not this time. The best part about not receiving a screener is I have no obligation to tell you who produces the film, or how you can watch it on VOD. So no blah, blah, blah, and blah to start this review.
Who is ready for the Pillow Meter?
- Two for One: Two Bruce Willis movies in two weeks is like 2 for 1 lap dances at your favorite strip club! What a deal!! We have just entered March, and Bruce has already cranked out a trio of movies in 2022. At least A Day to Die is directed by someone other than Edward Drake. If you are wondering, A Day to Die is directed by Wes Miller.
- Pillow Meter: Will a different director result in a non-comatose performance from Lazy B? If you don’t watch these movies for sport like I do, you might believe Bruce works a little bit to earn his big money paycheck in A Day to Die. It appears Bruce is in at least 3 big action scenes. Looks can be deceiving. Bruce rarely shoots a scene with another actor. You see Bruce mumble-talk, you see the other actor speak their lines clearly. They don’t share the screen. Bruce has a couple of scenes with Frank Grillo, and they MIGHT actually be in the same room at the same time for one brief second. You think Bruce is at the big climatic car shootout. Nope, that’s a double. Bruce gets out of a car at the hospital. Nope, that’s a double too. Bruce does share a scene with Leon, and I believe Bruce is friends with Johnny Messner because they share the screen as well. Perhaps they carpooled to the set and filmed all their scenes at the same time? How much extra effort must the filmmaking crew use to make it appear like Bruce is doing more than he does? The pillows are strong in A Day to Die… 4 out of 5 pillows.
- Johnny Drama: Talk about art imitating life. Kevin Dillon is the lead, and his role is straight outta an episode of Entourage. This is most-definitely a role Johnny “Drama” Chase would’ve sold his soul for. I did not have Kevin Dillon on my 2022 Action Star Bingo Card. Do you even care about the plot for A Day to Die? I don’t. I am just being honest. Like really, who is going to read a Bruce Willis 2022 movie for a plot description? It is pretty-much the same movie plot over and over again.
- Wrap Up: I’ve wasted enough of your time. You know exactly what you’re getting into if you choose to watch A Day to Die. Frank Grillo is good in his scenes. Does he not care what roles he takes? Leon is pretty cool as well. Overall, new director, but same Bruce Willis:
- Grade: C
That was actually him in some of the climax, probably got thrown a few extra bucks for being there. And yes, he’s good friends with Johnny Messner, after Messner did an interview for Anacondas in like 2005 he said that Bruce is one of the very few real men left in Hollywood. Something to that effect.
Looks like Bruce had to work a little bit to earn the paycheck
