Ryan Shoots First: Moon Knight (S1 Ep2) “Summon the Suit”
After a strong first episode Moon Knight is back for week 2 and while we get a few answers there is still much to learn.
The strength of this episode came from the interactions between the two sides of our main character. Whether it be Mark or Steven both are interesting characters in their own right but the push and pull as they begin to interact on a more personal basis is where the core of the story will lie. As I mentioned below in my observations there are few people that could pull this role off the way Oscar Isaac does. His ability to play the goof in over his head but with a strong moral center and the cool confident bad ass is on full display and I’m glad we got to see a little more of the latter this week. In many of the promo materials they showed off the two alternate suits for Moon Knight and I won’t give it all away. I will say I hope we get to see more of the interplay of the two suits in varying circumstances as the adventure moves forward.
There is still plenty of mystery though as we are already a third of the way through the season not just around the circumstances of how we got here but how exactly all this works and what is the endgame exactly for Steven and Marc. We also get some more of Ethan Hawke as Arthur in this episode and while as I predicted his scenes with Isaac are strong it was nice to get a little more insight into his character’s motivations and connections to this mystical world. Also we are now on to two weeks where there is no mention at all of the greater MCU in this world. To be fair we don’t even know where it falls into the timeline it could be pre-snap even. The fact they have managed to go two episodes and hold the urge to connect to the greater timeline is impressive and speaks to the confidence they have in the show.
As the show now pivots to its middle chapter I’m torn on where I want to see the inner battle of Mark and Steven go. On one hand their tug of war is super interesting and fun to watch but I also would like to see what the two sides can do if they have a more cohesive partnership. Part of me doesn’t want the show to just finally show us this in the finale so we never get the full payoff. For now I will continue to sit back and enjoy and see where Marvel goes with this and if it all turns out to be Mephisto in the end.
Observations

- I can’t decide if I want the show to lay out all the mystery or keep it going.
- I can’t imagine someone who could play this role better than Oscar Isaac.
