Ryan Shoots First: Obi-Wan Kenobi (S1 Ep5)
It’s hard to believe, but yes it is penultimate episode time! And man what an episode. To all the fans on Star Wars Twitter who have been complaining about Obi-Wan this episode will really have them digging for something to gripe about. Do you want to know how I know this? Someone was pointing out how there was a hidden Mickey in a skyline shot…
Of course in this section, I try not to spoil the episode too much but let’s just say Vader is the highlight of this episode. Say what you will about Disney’s curation of Star Wars but it is clear they hold Vader in elite territory. Between Rogue One, Rebels, the comic, and Jedi Fallen Order he is handled delicately and is an absolute menace. This episode of Obi-Wan only lends to that prestige. Not to be outdone is Obi-Wan himself, last week we saw some glimpses of him becoming the man he used to be, and this week he makes the biggest leap yet of the season. Really beginning to mentally regain what made him not only a compassionate helper of those in need but a brilliant tactician able to always keep his head and see a few steps ahead. The chess match in this episode between Him and Vader is one of the highlights of the series so far.
Reva also gets a helping of backstory and development this week, again something many have been complaining about but you just have to be patient and let stories play out. Not just her but a few other loose ends that have been driving fans wild are explained and tied up nicely here. Everything is set up for a real treat next week in the finale and by looking at the run time of 90 minutes we’re going to get a lot of action.
I’m really enjoying the season and the characters, Deborah Chow is a confident director, and while I could do with a little less shaky-cam her experience in the Volume from directing past episodes of Mando shows.
Observations
- Oh…. some stuff is gonna go down in this episode.
- YESSSSSS! Not quite the Clone Wars flashback we wanted but it will do.
- Well, that’s a cool R2 variant droid.
- That is significant right there, Obi-Wan finally deciding to help someone outside of his Skywalker mission.
- Somewhere someone is frantically translating all that Aurebesh
- The chess match here of Vader learning and deciding to wait them out even though Obi-Wan thinks Anakin won’t have the patience for it.
- Yep, that’s pretty much what I and many assumed that Reva was a padawan that saw Anakin during Order 66.
- I could do with a little less shaky cam
- Not chonky boi!!!
- TRUE. JEDI.
- Oh damn. That was awesome
- Ok, this finally has to please the Vader fans. Wow
- See people this is why you let stories play out.
